Aston, PA (Oct.31, 2005) - The Crusaders won their last regular-season PAC game over Neumann 3-2 to clinch Alvernia's first ever play-off birth for men's soccer. Alvernia saw their PAC record improve to 6-3, which is good enough for a fourth place finish in the conference.
Neumann started the scoring early with sophmore Mike Barbagallo scoring only six minutes into the game. The scored remained 1-0 until the 55th minute of the game, when Kyle Keller (Mount Penn/PA, Antietam) put one away for his fifth goal of the season. Neumann quicly answered with their second goal in the 59th by sophomore Barry Harvey to put them back ahead 2-1.
Alvernia battled back with Maarten Kootstra (Mount Penn/PA, Antietam) assisting Cody Gambler (Mohrsville, PA/Schuylkill Valley) on the game-tying goal 62 minutes into the game. Kessler then notched his second goal of the game, and sixth on the season with an assist from Gambler 79 minutes into the game.
Alvernia will now prepare to head to Eastern on Wed. Nov. 2 for PAC semi-final action. Eastern finished with a 9-0 record in the PAC, which was good for first place, and the regular season saw Alvernia fall to Eastern by a score of 1-3.
