Reading, PA (Sept. 1, 2005) – The Ursinus College men’s soccer team buried a first-half free kick and took advantage of a second-half defensive breakdown to top Alvernia College, 2-1, in the season opener for both teams Thursday afternoon in non-conference action at Schlager Memorial Field.
Ursinus (1-0) opened the scoring on a direct kick in the 10th minute of play. The Crusaders (0-1) held possession for most of the opening 10 minutes, but it was the Bears who took advantage of an early opportunity. Alvernia keeper Richard Kessler (Reading, PA/Reading), who made three saves on the day, raced out for a 50-50 ball near the top of the box and his momentum carried him a step out. The line judge awarded the free kick and Ursinus freshman Donald Reilly (King of Prussia, PA/Upper Merion) ripped a shot inside the left post putting the guests up 1-0.
Alvernia had numerous chances to tie the score, the best perhaps a penalty kick by Zach Naylon (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin) in the 67th minute that Ursinus goalie, Brian Berkowitz (Philadelphia, PA/North Catholic) turned away.
The Bears took a 2-0 lead in the 72nd minute when Corey Goldberg (Ivyland, PA/Council Rock) found freshman Ted Hooven (West Chester, PA/Devon Prep) on the left side, and he easily deposited a chip shot over the charging Kessler.
Alvernia made good on its second penalty kick of the day when Cody Gambler (Mohrsville, PA/Schuylkill Valley) converted in the 76th minute to pull within one, 2-1. Chanced continued for the hosts throughout the remainder of play, but the Crusaders could not make good on the equalizer.
Alvernia falls to 1-4 all-time versus Ursinus and will travel to Penn State-Berks on Saturday for another non-conference match at 1:00 p.m.
