Grande And Gambler Figure In Scoring Again

Box Score

Reading, PA (Sept. 14, 2005) – The two leading goal scorers for Alvernia College, juniors Cody Gambler (Mohrsville, PA/Schuylkill Valley) and Moss Grande (Sinking Spring, PA/Wilson), each tallied a goal as the Crusaders beat Cabrini College, 4-1, for the first victory over the Cavaliers in program history Wednesday afternoon in Pennsylvania Athletic Conference men’s soccer action at Schlager Memorial Field.

Gambler tallied the first goal of the day in the 10th minute assisted by freshman midfielder Tim Marcinek (Philadelphia, PALaSalle).  The 5-10 forward took one dribble past a defender at the top of the box and ripped a left-footer past a diving Andrew Brady, who made four stops for the Cavaliers (1-5-1, 0-1 PAC).  Junior transfer Zach Naylon (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin) put the Crusaders (2-4, 1-1 PAC) up 2-0 with another rip just inside the 18, assisted by freshman Ryan Rutherford (Fleetwood, PA/Fleetwood).

The Crusaders appeared to be heading into the break on a rainy afternoon with a 2-0 lead until a late cross from Cabrini midfielder Dave Maliosieki slipped through the hands of freshman keeper Richard Kessler (Reading, PA/Reading) and Ryan Hoff deposited the ball with two seconds left on the first half clock.

Scoring chances continued for the Crusaders early in the second half, but with just under 32 minutes left a flash of lightning halted play for what ended up being an 80-minute break.  Gambler appeared to have his second goal of the day minutes after the restart, but was whistled for offsides and the lead remained one goal.  Grande pushed it to two with his fourth goal of the season in the 67th minute.  Just over three minutes later Rutherford knocked home his first collegiate goal on a failed clear and the Crusaders cruised to a 4-1 victory.

Prior to today’s win Alvernia was 0-10 versus the Cavaliers.  The combination of Gambler and Grande has combined for nine of Alvernia’s 13 goals this season.  Alvernia will continue the conference schedule with a home game versus Gwynedd-Mercy College on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Schlager Memorial Field.
