Radnor, PA (Sept. 20, 2005) – Alvernia College had won 15 straight games in which juniors Becky Macchione (Richland, PA/Conrad Weiser) and Megan Novogratz (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) each tallied a goal, but the streak came to an end as both scored in a 3-2 loss to Cabrini College Tuesday afternoon in Pennsylvania Athletic Conference field hockey action at Cabrini.
The Cavaliers (3-4, 3-1 PAC), winners of three straight, opened the scoring with two goals in the opening nine minutes of play. Alvernia (5-3, 4-1), which trailed Cabrini 2-0 last season before rattling off three straight goals in a 12-minute span, scored twice in a 10-minute span as Novogratz and Macchione struck to tie the game at 2-2 with 16:10 left in the opening half.
The score remained tied at the half and it was the Cavaliers who drove home the eventual game-winner with 22:36 left in the second half. Alvernia senior Carey Manzolillo (Bernville, PA/Governor Mifflin) made eight saves in net for the Crusaders. Alvernia faces is second staunch conference test on Saturday when they travel to College Misericordia for a 11:00 a.m. match with the Cougars.
