Overtime Goal Gives Haverford A 1-0 Win At Alvernia

Crusaders Fall To 3-5 With Non-Conference Loss

Box Score

Reading, PA (Sept 21, 2005) – Sophomore Charlie Rubin (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle High) lofted a seemingly harmless cross that floated past freshman keeper Richard Kessler (Reading, PA/Reading) in the fifth minute of overtime to give Haverford College a 1-0 win over Alvernia College Wednesday afternoon in non-conference men’s soccer action at Schandler Memorial field.

The Crusaders (3-5) had their chances, especially late in regulation, but were denied every time.  Junior Cody Gambler (Mohrsville, PA/Schuylkill Valley) ripped a shot from the top of the 18 that Haverford freshman Adam Care (Manhasset, NY/Manhasset) denied with a fingertip save in the final minutes of the second half.  The ensuing corner kick led to another Crusader rip that eluded Care, but was cleared off the line by the defense, wisely positioned inside the near post.

Possession swung back and forth for the first five minutes of the overtime period and most of those in attendance seemed unconcerned about Rubin making his way down the left side until his arching shot passed Kessler’s outstretched hand.  Haverford improves to 4-1-1 with the win.

The Crusaders will travel to Marywood University on Saturday for a conference match-up with the Pacers.
