Efficient Cedar Crest Tops Alvernia, 2-1, In Double Overtime

Falcons Score Two Goals On Two Shots After Halftime

Box Score

Reading, PA (Sept. 24, 2005) – Cedar Crest College scored on its only shot of the second half to force overtime and again on its only shot in overtime to steal a 2-1 win from Alvernia College in double overtime Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania Athletic Conference women’s soccer action at Schlager Memorial Field.

Senior forward Amanda Swartz (Elysburg, PA/Lourdes Regional) tapped a muffed ball into an empty net in the 109th minute of play to give Cedar Crest its first conference win of the season.  The Crusaders (2-6-1, 1-2-1 PAC) dominated most of the extra time, especially in the second overtime, but couldn’t finish.  Senior goalie Stefanie Harrington (E. Hampstead, NH/Pinkerton Academy) stuffed a breakaway attempt and dove on another ball ticketed for the side netting to extend play, and after the Crusaders were whistled for being offsides, the ensuing long ball eluded Alvernia keeper Katie Einsel (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) and Swartz beat the defense to the ball for the game-winner.

Alvernia sophomore Laura Beth Diggs (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial) opened the scoring in the 44th minute knocking a Brandi Light (Myerstown, PA/Tulpehocken) pass off a defender and into the back of the net.  Cedar Crest tied the score in the 64th minute when Brittanney Smith (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) took a long cross and chipped it over Einsel.

Alvernia held a huge 27-6 advantage in shots and a slight 5-3 edge in corner kicks.  Einsel made three saves for the Crusaders, who will travel to William Paterson for a 7:00, non-conference match on Monday.
