Selinsgrove, PA (Sept. 3, 2005) – Juniors Becky Macchione (Richland, PA/Conrad Weiser) and Megan Novogratz (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) each scored a goal as Alvernia College defeated Susquehanna University, 2-1, Saturday afternoon in non-conference action.
Alvernia (1-1) was 11-0 last season in games in which Macchione and Novogratz each tallied at least one goal. Senior goalie Carey Manzolilo (Bernville, PA/Governor Mifflin) was a key to the Crusaders’ win with 13 saves. Susquehanna held a 17-9 advantage in shots, including a 12-4 edge in the first half.
Macchione put Alvernia on top early with her second goal of the season just 1:36 into the game. She was assisted by junior Jessie Titus (Leesport, PA/Schuylkill Valley). Manzolilo was the story for the rest of the half making 10 first-half saves for a 1-0 halftime lead.
Novogratz gave the defense the much-needed insurance goal just under 10 minutes into the second half scoring on a Macchione assist that put Alvernia up 2-0. Susquehanna quickly struck back on a goal by Becki Nash, but Manzolilo held the Crusaders off the board for the remainder of play and Alvernia evened up its overall record at 1-1.
