Glassboro, NJ (Sept. 1, 2005) – The Rowan University field hockey team built a 3-0 first half lead and pushed the gap to 4-0 in the second half before cruising to a 5-1 win over Alvernia College Thursday afternoon in the non-conference season-opener for both teams.
Rowan sophomore Susan Massara led the offensive for the Profs with two goals and an assist. Alvernia’s lone goal came unassisted by junior Becky Macchione (Richland, PA/Conrad Weiser) with just over 10 minutes passed in the second half.
Rowan tallied its first goal 7:29 into the game and held the slim advantage until two goals in a six minute span put the hosts up 3-0 with 28:43 gone by. Massara scored her first goal of the game just two minutes after intermission and dashed any hopes of a Crusader comeback. Macchione scored eight minutes later and Massara closed the scoring with 12 minutes left to play. Liz Unger assisted on both Massara goals.
Rowan carried an impressive 30-2 advantage in shots over the Crusaders. Senior goalie Carey Manzolilo (Bernville, PA/Governor Mifflin) made nine saves in 52 minutes for Alvernia and freshman Audrey Hoffman (Mertztown, PA/Brandywine Heights) played the final 18 minutes and made four saves.
Alvernia will travel to Susquehanna University on Saturday for a non-conference match-up with the Crusaders.
