Dover, DE (Jan. 28, 2006) - Three days after scoring a career-high 28 points in a home victory over Misericordia, Alvernia College junior Garrett Etzel (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin) totalled 27 points on the strength of six 3-pointers to lead Alvernia to an 89-79 win over Wesley College Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania Athletic Conference men's basketball action at Wesley.
Fielding a roster limited by injury and illness, the Crusaders played four players the full 40 minutes and a fifth over 36 minutes as they improved to 11-1 in conference. Senior forward Zach Straining (Paxtang, PA/Central Dauphin East) scored 20 points for the Crusaders (15-4, 11-1 PAC) on 9-of-15 shooting and freshman Sharron Richardson (Chester, PA/Chester) set a new career high with 20 points.
Wesley was led by freshman Rashawn Johnson (Selbyville, DE/Sussex Tech) who tallied 25 points. Nick Minor (Gambrills, MD/Anne Arundel) scored 20 points for the hosts and Greg Cooke (Wilmington, DE/Hodgson) added 13.
Alvernia shot 56 percent from the floor and 70 percent from the free throw line (14-of-20). Alvernia held a 47-42 lead at halftime and outrebounded Wesley 36-26.
