Crusaders Post Sixth Shutout This Season

Reading, Pa. (Oct. 2, 2006) – Sophomore Christy Miller (Alburtis, PA/Brandywine Heights) scored a pair of goals and the Alvernia defense held stout for an 8-0 win over Cedar Crest College Monday afternoon in Pennsylvania Athletic Conference field hockey action at Alvernia.  It was the Crusaders sixth shutout of the season and fourth in the last five games.

            Alvernia rattled off 22 shots in the opening period and scored five goals.  Senior Becky Macchione (Richland, PA/Conrad Weiser) got things started in the 10th minute with her team-leading ninth goal of the season.  Miller followed 27 seconds later assisted by Macchione and Dawn Beiswenger (Denver, PA/Garden Spot) made it 3-0 in the 26th minute.  Amanda Daher (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) and Megan Novogratz (Allentown, PA/Central Catholic) also added goals before the end of the first half.

            Tara Chapelle (Royersford, PA/St. Pius X) scored her first goal of the season early in the second half and Megan Sowders (Atco, NJ/Hammonton) followed suite in the 62nd minute.  Miller waiting until the 68th minute to cap the scoring with her second of the game and fifth of the season.

            Alvernia keeper Audrey Hoffman (Mertztown, PA/Brandywine Heights) was untested in net for the Crusaders while Kirsten Gustafson (New Milford, CT/New Milford) made seven saves for the Falcons.

            Alvernia will host Eastern University Thursday afternoon in a rematch of last year’s PAC Championship Final which the Crusaders won 4-3 in ovetime.
