Scranton, Pa. (Oct. 4, 2006) – Marywood University scored once in the second half, after a 30-minute lightning delay, and held on for a 2-1 win over Alvernia College Wednesday afternoon in Pennsylvania Athletic Conference women’s soccer action at Marywood. The game was ended with 14:10 left by lightning.
Marywood (8-4, 3-3 PAC) opened the scoring in the 21st minute on a goal by Annie McDonald. The Crusaders (3-5-1, 2-4-1 PAC) tied the score in the 39th minute when senior Lisa Sothern (Philadelphia, PA/Cardinal Dougherty) scored unassisted.
Both teams sat through a 30-minute lightning delay early in the second half and Marywood posted the game-winner five minutes after returning to action when Amanda Costello found the back of the net.
Marywood held a 22-10 advantage in shots and a 13-2 edge in corner kicks. Alvernia senior Katie Einsel (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) made a season-high 14 saves while Marywood keeper Amy Hand made three saves.
Alvernia will travel back to the Scranton area on Saturday for an afternoon game with College Misericordia.
