Reading, Pa. (Oct. 5, 2006) – Eastern University took advantage of an efficient first half, scoring three goals on three shots en route to a 3-1 win over Alvernia College in a battle of conference unbeatens Thursday afternoon in Pennsylvania Athletic Conference field hockey action at Alvernia.
Eastern junior Jamie Heck (Butler, NJ/Butler) opened the scoring for the Eagles (12-0, 8-0 PAC) assisted by Christy Miller (Elverson, PA/Twin Valley) in the 12th minute. Miller helped senior Lauren Latsha (Middletown, PA/Harrisburg Christian) three minutes later and the guests were up 2-0. Eastern senior Emily Davis (Strasburg, PA/Lancaster Christian) made it 3-0 assisted by Stephanie Moyer (Telford, PA/Christopher Dock) in the 29th minute and the Eagles took the three-goal lead into the break.
Alvernia registered two shots in the first half with Eastern goalie Kelly Garland (Newtown Square, PA/Marple Newtown) making her only save of the day to keep the Crusaders off the board.
Alvernia (10-2, 6-1 PAC) broke through in the 53rd minute on an unassisted goal by freshman Janelle Lynch (Macungie, PA/Brandywine Heights). The Crusaders built pressure inside the offensive circle and after an initial effort was blocked, Lynch picked up the loose ball near the right post and dropped in her second goal of the season.
Alvernia starter Mandy Yocum (Morgantown, PA/Twin Valley) played 43 minutes without a save, and reserve goalie Audrey Hoffman (Mertztown, PA/Brandywine Heights) played the balance and made five saves.
The loss snapped an eight game winning streak for the Crusaders who will host Cabrini College for Senior Day on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
