BOX SCORE
Reading, Pa. (Oct. 7, 2006) – Seniors Becky Macchione (Richland, PA/Conrad Weiser) and Megan Novogratz (Allentown, PA/Central Catholic) scored the first two goals of the game to lead Alvernia College to a 4-0 win over Cabrini College in Pennsylvania Athletic Conference field hockey action Saturday afternoon on Senior Day at Alvernia.
Macchione scored her 10th goal of the season unassisted in the first half on a drive from the left side of the circle. Alvernia held a 12-4 advantage in shots in the opening half, but held just a 1-0 lead at the break. Cabrini goalie Elissa Salantri (Wycombe, PA/Council Rock North) made five of her nine saves before the break.
Cabrini (5-8, 5-3 PAC) mounted a second half threat as the game clock came under 15 minutes remaining, but the Crusaders (11-2, 7-1 PAC) turned them aside and quickly scored on the counter attack. Novogratz carried the ball across midfield and handed off to senior Jessie Titus (Leesport, PA/Schuylkill Valley) who returned the ball at the top of the circle and Novogratz teed up her ninth goal of the season.
Freshman Janelle Lynch (Macungie, PA/Brandywine Heights) helped the Crusaders put the game out of reach in the 64th minute. After sprinting the ball down the left sideline, Lynch crossed a ball that bounced around in front of Salantri. Alvernia junior Shayna Clark (Leesport, PA/Schuylkill Valley) collected the ball, pulled it out of trouble, and blasted home her seventh goal of the season.
Junior reserve Lynsey Treadwell (Farmingdale, NJ/Howell) closed the scoring for the Crusaders one-timing a cross from Macchione in the game’s final minute.
Sophomore Audrey Hoffman (Mertztown, PA/Brandywine Heights) started in net for the Crusaders and made five saves in 51 minutes. Mandy Yocum (Morgantown, PA/Twin Valley) played the final 19 minutes and needed just one save to preserve the shutout.
Alvernia, which improved to 32-4 all-time in games which both Macchione and Novogratz score at least one goal each, will travel to Arcadia University on Wednesday for a conference match-up with the Knights.
