Reading, Pa. (Oct. 9, 2006) – Freshman Kate McCaffrey (Northeast, PA/St. Hubert) and senior Kristina Bittner (Boothwyn, PA/Cardinal O’Hara) both tallied second half goals to lead Alvernia College to a 2-0 win over DeSales University Monday afternoon in non-conference women’s soccer action at Schlager Memorial Field.
Alvernia senior Katie Einsel (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) kept the Bulldogs (4-9) off the board in the first half making five saves, and Danielle Fitzpatrick (Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge) played the second half and recorded seven saves to preserve the shutout.
Senior defender Karen Hutton (Ridgewood, NJ/Eastern Christian) set up McCaffrey on a corner kick that was headed home by the first-year defender for her second goal of the season. The scored remained 1-0 into the late minutes until Bittner cleaned up her third goal of the season following the initial drive from Brandi Light (Myerstown, PA/Tulpehocken).
DSU keeper Kelly Hinkle (Quakertown, PA/Quakertown) made seven saves in net for the Bulldogs. DSU held a 16-11 advantage in shots while the Crusaders (4-6-1) held a 5-1 edge in corner kicks.
Alvernia will play its second of five straight home games Thursday when it hosts Neumann College for a conference match.
