Gettysburg Rallies Past Crusaders

Key Injuries See Alvernia Bite the Bullet

Reading, Pa. (October 29, 2006) - The Gettysburg Bullets showing little sign of fatigue that would usually accompany back to back games and scored eight unanswered goals, handing Alvernia a rather sobering 9-4 loss.  The game certainly was no reflection of the score, with the teams locked up in a 4-4 tie entering the third period.  Alvernia lost the lead and the momentum and could do nothing right over the final 20 minutes.

The Vern started with a vengeance jumping out to 3-0 lead in the opening period.  Third line center ~John Caputo (Philadelphia, PA/Roman Catholic HS) rifled home a short handed goal just minutes into the game, sparking a charged Crusader squad.  Just over a minute later, freshman David Warriner (Phoenixville, PA/Methacton HA) slotted home a nice point blank shot from the right slot.  Warriner’s line mate Pete Cirard (Levittown, PA/Harry Truman HS) supported the offense with a power play tally just over a minute in the first frame.  The second line was dominating, with a flourish of odd man rushes.  The promotion of Ryan Kelly (Ardmore, PA/Lower Merion HS), Cirard, and Warriner to the first line was a late decision by Coach Kelly that seemed to ignite the trio.  Warriner had an outstanding performance, which was cut short in the third period in open ice collision.

Alvernia would take the 3-0 lead into the first period intermission.  Gettysburg must have recharged the batteries while playing in their third straight game.  The Bullet's first goal was a ricochet number that redirected several different times and bounced behind the unsuspecting goalie Chris Medico (Madison, NJ/Madison HS).  The fluke goal seem to put life into a Gettysburg squad teetering on a respirator.  Closing the margin to 3-1, the Bullets gave back the goal three minutes later when Warriner drove the slot, sliding a nifty forehand up the inside of the post.  Warriner was nothing less than spectacular creating more than his share of high percentage scoring chances.  Alvernia reclaimed the three goal margin, however this would prove to be the final hoorah for the Crusaders this evening.

Gettysburg tied the game with just over two minutes remaining in the second period thanks to the generosity of  a short handed Crusader situation.  Alvernia lost the lead early in the third period and never saw the light of day.  Numerous penalties and two key player losses added insult to injury.  Third line right winger Joe Pietrobone (Reading, PA/Reading HS) was escorted off midway through the second period with a bruised clavicle.  Warriner left in the third period with a mild concussion.  Alvernia played with a short bench for the final minutes of the third period allowing Getttysburg some insurance goals in an otherwise close game.
