Widener Tops Vern 7-6 with Final Minute Goal

Ryan Kelly's Hat Trick Highlights Crusaders Strong Effort

Aston, Pa. (Feb. 11, 2006) - Widener University scored the game winning goal with 13 seconds remaining in the third period to complete a two game season sweep of the Crusaders.  The second meeting was almost a carbon copy of the team’s earlier contest this season when Widener tallied a late goal with 34 seconds remaining in regulation.  The game would see-saw back and fourth with the lead changing hands four times. The game enjoyed numerous scoring opportunities at both ends but ultimately Widener one upped the Crusaders.

Conor Delaney opened the scoring for Alvernia, handling a wrap around pass from playmaker Bruce Hawthorne.  Delaney enjoyed his first collegiate goal after directing a low wrist shot underneath the dropped goalies pads.  Widener rallied quickly to even the contest, but Alvernia’s offensive sniper Chris Pratt made easy work of another Hawthorne assist to regain the edge.  The first period came to a close with Widener locking up the score with a late goal.

Ryan Kelly started the second period with his first of three goals on the afternoon.  Kelly has been adjusting well to new line mate Billy Heller.  The versatile Heller has adapted to his change with creative scoring options which have bolstered up the second line.  The Crusaders surrendered yet another even-up goal.  Bruce Hawthorne would not let that stand, as his aggressive neutral zone forecheck created a break away steal that Hawthorne deposited over the glove hand side and into the twine.  The Vern proceeded to give up two last minute goals, handing Widener a one goal lead entering the third period.

The Crusaders once again showed resilience as Ryan Kelly pumped home two quick goals leap-frogging the visitors back into a 6-5 lead.  Kelly’s bursts of speed kept Widener back on their heels all day.  Unfortunately late game defensive breakdowns would foil the workman-like effort of the entire team.  Alvernia Ice Hockey continues to improve and gain credibility with each game in their inaugural campaign.
