Reading, PA (March 21, 2006) – In their first PAC match-up of the season, the Alvernia Crusaders fell to Immaculata 0-1 in the opener, before rebounding to defeat them 8-0 in the nightcap.
In the first game, the Crusaders scattered only four singles over seven innings, with freshman pitcher Emily Williams (Minersville PA, Nativity) going 2-for-3, and senior Danielle Machamer (Williamstown PA, Williamstown) going 1-for-3.  Starting pitcher Williams cruised through the first six innings, recording 12 strikeouts and giving up only one hit.
However, with one out in the seventh, Immaculata shortstop Caitlin Miller connected for a double, and advanced to third on an error by Machamer.  With runners now on first and third, the Alvernia defense committed an error on the throw to second in an attempt to catch the runner, allowing Miller to sneak home with the eventual game-winning run.  Despite a stellar pitching performance, Williams suffered the loss dropping her overall record to 0-5.
In the second game of the PAC doubleheader, Alvernia tallied seven hits, and forced Immaculata to commit five errors.  The Crusader’s offense was paced by Machamer who connected on a triple down the right field line to score two, and junior centerfielder Suzanne Fox (Glassboro NJ, Gloucester Catholic), who had the game-ending RBI on a single in the sixth to deep center.
Sophomore pitcher Beth Jablonowski (Philadelphia PA, Archbishop Ryan) went the distance and recorded her first win of the season, to even her record at 1-1.  Jablonowski recorded three strike-outs, gave up only two hits over the six innings, and had six defensive assists.
Williams finished the day going 3 for 5 with one walk and an RBI, Machamer was 2 for 6 with 2 RBIs.
The Crusaders are now 4-8 (1-1 PAC), and face an upcoming string of important conference games.  They will be traveling to Cabrini on Friday for a doubleheader versus the Cavaliers starting at 3:00pm.
