Diggs Paces Crusaders With Four Goals

Reading, PA (Mar. 21, 2006) – Gwynedd-Mercy College used a 4-0 run early in the second half to take a 10-7 lead en route to a 13-10 win over Alvernia College (0-1, 0-1 PAC) Tuesday afternoon in Pennsylvania Athletic Conference women’s lacrosse action at Schlager Memorial Field.

            Gwynedd-Mercy sophomore Kalli Bass (Lafayette Hill, PA/Plymouth Whitemarsh) led the Griffins (2-3, 2-1 PAC) with three goals and Alvernia sophomore Laura-Beth Diggs (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial) led all scorers with four goals.  GMC sophomore Lauren Monte (Perkasie, PA/Christopher Dock) made five saves to earn the win, while her counterpart Janelle Fulmer (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus) made seven saves in net for the Crusaders.

            GMC opened the scoring with a pair of goals before the Crusaders broke through for two quick goals forging the first of four ties on the day.  Diggs tallied the first for Alvernia and sophomore McKenna Shafer (Delran, NJ/Cinnaminson) scored notched the second.

            Bass broke the tie with her first goal of the day and sophomore midfielder Meghan Volz (Warminster, PA/Archbishop Wood) scored her eighth goal of the season for a 4-2 lead.  Alvernia battled back to knot the score at 5-all with 3:52 left before the break, but the Griffins took a 6-5 lead into halftime on a Molly Heenan (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) goal with just four seconds on the first half clock.

            Alvernia junior Karen Hutton (Ridgewood, NJ/Eastern Christian) took the opening draw of the second half and split the entire Griffin defense to score her first goal of the season and knot the score at 6-6.  Diggs’ second goal of the day gave Alvernia its first lead, 7-6, but GMC rattled off four goals in a span of 10:54 to take a 10-7 lead.  Four different players scored for the visitors during the stretch including team-leader Jennifer Mathesian (Aston, PA/Garnet Valley), who tallied her ninth goal of the season.

            Diggs scored again to stop the streak, but GMC tallied twice for a 12-8 lead with 5:08 to play.  Diggs and sophomore Katie O’Brien (Boothwyn, PA/Garnet Valley) scored to pull Alvernia within two, 12-10, but GMC closed the scoring on Bass’ third goal of the day with 30 seconds left in the game.

            Alvernia will continue the conference schedule with a trip to Immaculata University on Saturday.
