BOX SCORE (Game Two)
Reading, PA (March 25, 2006) – Junior starter Jason Zeigler (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) gave up just one earned run in six innings as Alvernia College took game one 12-4, and Arcadia held on for a 13-10 win in game two of a Pennsylvania Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Alvernia.
Alvernia (9-6, 1-2 PAC) did all of its damage in the first three innings of the opener posting an 8-spot in the third inning before cruising to the victory. Arcadia (9-7, 2-1 PAC) scored five runs in the fourth inning of the nightcap, and scored single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to hold off the Crusaders’ comeback attempt.
Alvernia junior Chris Raniere (Manalapan, NJ/St. John Vianney) knocked in three runs on three hits in the first game, his big blow a two run single up the middle in the 8-run third. Senior shortstop Eric Bonds (Lancaster, PA/Penn Manor) also collected three hits in four at-bats in game one.
Arcadia put the first two batters on in the fifth inning against Zeigler on a pair of Crusader errors and threatened for more with the bases loaded and no one out, but Zeigler got a double play and a ground out to limit the damage and ruin any thoughts of a rally.
Both teams scored three runs in the first inning of game two. Arcadia senior Brandon Mazzie (Easton, PA/Easton) knocked in a pair on a bases loaded single and Ken Spangenberg (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington) scored on a sacrifice fly. Alvernia evened the score with a 2-run single from Zach Lutz (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) and an RBI double from Raniere.
Arcadia had a 5-4 lead after three innings and sent all nine batters to the plate in the fourth scoring five times on four hits and two Alvernia errors for a 10-4 lead.
Alvernia took two innings to get all five runs back and trailed 11-9 after five. Both teams posted single runs in the sixth inning and Arcadia scored once in the seventh for the 13-10 final.
Zeigler took the win for Alvernia in the opener and Matt Remchuk (Mount Ephraim, NJ/Audubon) earned the win for Arcadia in game two.
