Alvernia Holds Off Misericordia, 14-7, With Second Half Spurt

Diggs Leads Crusaders With Three Goals, Novogratz Adds Two Helpers

Reading, PA (March 29, 2006) – Alvernia College answered a three-goal second half spurt with five of its own to hold off College Misericordia in a 14-7 win Wednesday afternoon in Pennsylvania Athletic Conference women’s lacrosse action at Schlager Memorial Field.

            Junior attack Lisa Ross (Quakertown, PA/Quakertown) scored her second goal of the game on a free position shot with 10:12 left to snap a string of three straight goals the Cougars (2-5, 2-1 PAC).  Sophomore Mckenna Shafer (Delran, NJ/Cinnaminson) scored two goals separated by 11 seconds, assisted both times by junior Megan Novogratz (Allentown, PA/Central Catholic).  Junior Karen Hutton (Ridgewood, NJ/Eastern Christian) added an unassisted goal and then assisted freshman Chrissy Paris (Pottstown, PA/Owen J. Roberts) on her first career goal to end the Crusaders’ second half response.

            Alvernia freshman Janelle Fulmer (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus) made eight saves for the win while Allison Hoffer (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin) turned away 17 shots for the Cougars.

            Ross and Hutton opened the scoring for Alvernia (2-2, 2-2 PAC) with unassisted goals in the first 2:09.  Alvernia added three more goals over the next 20 minutes for a 5-0 lead including the first of three from sophomore Laura-Beth Diggs (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial).

            CM got on the board when Amanda Felte (Hatboro, PA/Archbishop Wood) connected on a free position shot with 5:49 left in the first half.  Diggs scored again at 1:03 and junior Jen Smith (Hershey, PA/Hershey) scored 14 seconds before the break and the Crusaders enjoyed a 7-1 lead at the half.

            Sophomore Katie O’Brien (Boothwyn, PA/Garnet Valley) opened the second half scoring to push the Crusaders’ lead to 8-1 before the Cougars’ string of three straight cut the gap to 8-4.  Freshman Jamie Wargo (Springfield, VA/Thomas A. Edison) netted her 11th of the year to start the streak and junior Keira McMenamin (Lynbrook, NY/Sacred Heart) followed with her first two goals of the year.

            Diggs’ third goal of the day came on a free position shot with 3:20 to play.  Misericordia tallied three of the last four goals for the 14-7 final.

            Alvernia will continue the PAC schedule on Saturday when it hosts Neumann College at 1:00 p.m.
