12-Goal First Leads Neumann Past Alvernia, 18-7

Lafferty And McCreary Tally Five Each For Knights

Reading, PA (April 1, 2006) – Neumann College tallied 12 first-half goals including the last four before the break en route to an 18-7 win over Alvernia College Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania Athletic Conference women’s lacrosse action at Schlager Memorial Field.

            The teams alternating scoring for the first four goals before Neumann broke open a 3-3 tie with five straight goals, including three in a 22-second span, midway through the half.  Alvernia sophomore Katie O’Brien (Boothwyn, PA/Garnet Valley) stopped that streak with her seventh goal of the season, but the Knights (6-3, 5-1 PAC) answered with four more to take a 12-4 lead into the halftime break.

            Neumann scored the first six goals of the second half for an 18-4 lead and the Crusaders (2-3, 2-3 PAC) showed signs of life with three straight goals over a two minute span with under 10 minutes to play.  Sophomore McKenna Shafer (Delran, NJ/Cinnaminson) scored two of her team-high three goals for the Crusaders in the last flurry.

            Alvernia goalie Janelle Fulmer (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus) made seven saves for the Crusaders while counterpart Caitlin O’Shea (Springfield, PA/Springfield) stopped six shots for the Knights.

            Alvernia will host St. Thomas Aquinas in a non-conference game on Monday.
