Winchester, Va. (April 18, 2006) – Alvernia College freshman Tom Fraker (Carlisle, PA/Carlisle) scored his fifth goal of the night to tie the score with 1:40 left in regulation and sophomore Tom Novak (Pottstown, PA/Pottsgrove) scored the winner in overtime as the Crusaders defeated Shenandoah University, 9-8 in Pennsylvania Athletic Conference men’s lacrosse action Tuesday evening at Shenandoah.
The host Hornets (2-9, 1-4 PAC) scored a pair of early goals to take a 2-0 lead less than five minutes into play. Alvernia senior Ryan Fries (Philadelphia, PA/Bishop McDevit) put the Crusaders (2-11, 1-3 PAC) on the board with 9:49 left in the first and Novak tied it at 2-2 at 6:36.
Shenandoah regained the lead with a goal at 1:17 and Fraker’s first goal of the game with 34 ticks left in the first tied the score at 3-3 after one quarter. Fries scored to open the second quarter and Fraker scored twice as the guests built a 6-3 lead at the halftime break.
Fraker made it three straight with the first goal of the third quarter for a 7-3 lead, but Shenandoah responded with five in a row over the final 12:47 of the third and nearly nine minutes of the fourth quarter. Stephen Mayor’s second goal of the night capped five straight and left the hosts up 8-7 with 6:50 to play.
Fraker’s fifth of the night at 1:40 of the fourth tied the score at 8-all and Novak posted the game-winner with 33 seconds left in the overtime period.
Alvernia will continue the conference schedule hosting Villa Julie on Saturday afternoon.
