BOX SCORE
Allentown, PA (April 2, 2006) – Sophomore starter Zach Lutz (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) gave up three runs on eight hits over seven innings and smacked a solo homerun in the fifth to propel Alvernia College to a 7-3 over Moravian College Sunday afternoon in non-conference baseball action at Gillespie Field.
The Alvernia defense made four errors, marking the fifth time in 21 games this season the Crusaders (12-9) have committed four or more errors, but the offense was enough to handle the Greyhounds (3-17). Three errors in the third led to three runs for the hosts leading to a 3-3 tie after three. Lutz and junior Jason Zeigler (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin) hit back-to-back solo homeruns in the fifth for a 5-3 lead, and Zeigler, who finished a double short of the cycle had an RBI-triple and scored in a 2-run seventh.
Ryan Mark (Pennsburg, PA/Upper Perkiomen) led off the game with the first of Alvernia’s three triples on the day and scored when Eric Bonds (Lancaster, PA/Penn Manor) grounded out to short. Bonds’ triple followed a Mark double in the third and Zeigler knocked him in as the Crusaders went up 3-0 prior to Moravian’s only scoring inning of the day.
Kevin Gambrio (Brick, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) reached on an error to open the home third and Josh Baltz (Easton, PA/Easton) knocked him in with a single. Joseph Durso (Middletown, NJ/Christian Brother Academy) chased home Baltz with a triple down the leftfield line and scored on a Bonds throwing error. The Greyhounds put two more on with an error and a single, but Lutz limited the damage inducing an inning-ending groundout to third.
Bonds opened the Crusaders’ seventh with a single and a stolen base and scored on Zeigler’s triple down the right field line. Sophomore Steve Burdan (Pottstown, PA/Pottstown) doubled home Zeigler for the final run of the day. Zeigler grounded out to the pitcher to end the eighth, needing the double for the cycle.
Alvernia will travel to Albright College for a non-conference match-up with the Lions on Tuesday.
