Eight Run Sixth Gives Alvernia Sweep Of PSU Berks

Daher Saves Game One, Wins Game Two

Reading, PA (April 24, 2006) – Junior pitcher Amanda Daher (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) recorded the final six outs in the opener to pick up her first save and the offense tallied eight runs in the sixth inning of game two making Daher a winner in game two of a doubleheader sweep of Penn State Berks Monday afternoon in non-conference softball action at Alvernia.

            Freshman Emily Williams (Minersville, PA/Nativity BVM) gave up two runs over five innings before leaving game one after catching a line drive on the forearm.  Daher surrendered an RBI double and a one-out, run-scoring single before ending the threat with a groundball double play.  She followed that with a scoreless ninth to close the door on a 4-3 win and pick up her first save of the season.

            In the nightcap, PSU-Berks scored an unearned run in the top of the sixth to break a 7-7 tie, but Alvernia answered with eight runs on nine hits in the home half of the sixth.  The big blow a bases-clearing double off the bat of Allison McCready (Williamstown, PA/Williams Valley).  Daher walked the leadoff hitter in the seventh, but retired the next three to pick up her second win on the season.

            Colleen Ambrosius (Philadelphia, PA/St. Basil Academy) was 2-for-3 in the opener with two runs scored and Beth Jablonowski (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) knocked in two runs on a 1-for-3 effort at the plate.  Williams finished the six strikeouts in five innings in the circle.

            Jackie Rhoads (Dillsburg, PA/Northern York) was the hitting star for the home team in game two going 5-for-5 at the plate with three RBIs and two runs scored.  The top three batters in the Crusaders’ lineup combined to go 9-for-15 with seven runs and seven RBIs.

            Jablonowski, batting in the no. 5 spot, was 2-for-4 with three runs and four RBIs.  She also threw 2 2/3 innings of relief giving up five runs on three hits.  Freshman Megan Sowders (Atco, NJ/Hammonton) got the start in game two and pitched 2 1/3 innings giving up three runs on four hits.  All three Alvernia pitchers in game two recorded one strikeout.

            Alvernia will face Cedar Crest College in a Pennsylvania Athletic Conference doubleheader on Tuesday.
