Reading Pa. (April 25, 2006) – The Alvernia College Crusaders dropped a key PAC doubleheader this afternoon at Cedar Crest College.  The Falcons took game one 2-1 after a Crusader error allowed the game-winner to score in the bottom of the sixth.  Cedar Crest then followed up their 2-1 victory, with a second game 13-8 win.  With the loss, Alvernia drops to (17-19, 11-9 PAC) heading into their final week of regular-season action.

Junior Amanda Daher (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) pitched the complete first game for a 2-1 loss.  She scattered seven hits over six innings, and walked only two.  The Falcons struck first in game one when they pushed one across in the second on a sacrifice fly to centerfield.  The Crusaders answered quickly in the third inning when junior Alyson McCready (Williamstown, PA/Williams Valley) connected for a two-out double, and scored on a triple that was crushed by junior Suzanne Fox (Glassboro, NJ/Gloucester).

The game remained tied 1-1 until the bottom of the sixth, when the Falcons connected for a one-out single.  The runner advanced to second on a fielder’s choice, and a base hit to left field was bobbled allowing the runner to advance home for the game winner.

In the second game, Alvernia jumped on Cedar Crest in the top of the first inning, taking the early 1-0 lead after McCready led off with a single, advanced on a Falcon error, and scored on a RBI fielder’s choice by sophomore Jackie Rhoads (Dillsburg, PA/Northern York).  However, the Crusader’s lead did not last long, as the Falcons tagged Alvernia starter Megan Sowders (Atco, NJ/Hammonton) for eight runs on eight hits and one error in the bottom of the first inning.  Daher relieved Sowders in the first with one out and bases still loaded, and managed to get out of the inning after inducing two pop fly outs.

Alvernia battled back to push across two in the second on back to back base hits by freshman Lauren Crimi (Nazareth, PA/Notre Dame) and sophomore Shannon Higgins (Blue Bell, PA/Wissahickan) started the inning.  After two quick outs, McCready stepped up with an RBI double.

Cedar Crest added one run in the second and another in the third.  However, Alvernia continued to battle back, scoring another three runs in the fourth, one in the fifth and one in the sixth, led by sophomore Colleen Ambrosius’ (Philadelphia, PA/St. Basil Academy) 2-RBI double, and Crimi’s lead off triple in the sixth.

The Falcons added three more in the bottom of the sixth off of Daher to secure their 13-8 victory.
