Lower Gwynedd, PA (April 29, 2006) – Fourth-seeded Gwynedd-Mercy College scored a goal with 15 seconds left to take a 13-12 win over fifth-season Alvernia College Saturday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference Women’s Lacrosse Championships at Gwynedd-Mercy.
Jen Mathesian scored for Gwynedd-Mercy on a free position shot with 1:04 left in the first half to pull the hosts within a goal at the break, 5-4. Alvernia junior Lisa Ross (Quakertown, PA/Quakertown) scored the first goal of the second half to double the Crusaders’ lead to two, 6-4, and after Mathesian’s third goal of the day with 25:12 left in the second half pulled GMC within one, 7-6, neither team held a lead of more than one goal the rest of the way.
Meghan Volz broke an 11-all tie assisted by Caitlin Volz with 1:18 left to play to give the Griffins their fourth one-goal lead of the day. Alvernia sophomore Katie O’Brien (Boothwyn, PA/Garnet Valley) answered 16 seconds later scoring an unassisted goal to tie the score at 12-12, but Meghan Volz’s tally with 15 ticks left sent the Griffins to the PAC semifinal with a 13-12 win.
Alvernia sophomore McKenna Shafer (Delran, NJ/Cinnaminson) led all scorers with six goals on the day. She scored the Crusaders’ first three goals as the guests built a 3-1 lead with 12:42 left in the first half. Shafer added three more goals after the halftime break, her final goal tying the score at 9-all with 10:17 to play.
Laura-Beth Diggs (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Regional Memorial) knotched a hat trick for the Crusaders while Mathesian and Kate Loftus scored three goals apiece for the Griffins.
Janelle Fulmer (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus) made nine saves in net for the Crusaders who finish the season at 7-5.
