BOX SCORE
Radnor, Pa. (Sept. 13, 2006) – Alvernia College opened the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference schedule with a 3-1 victory over Cabrini College Wednesday afternoon in men’s soccer action at Cabrini. Alvernia senior Zach Naylon (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin), the PAC Player of the Week, netted the game-winner for the Crusaders (3-1-1, 1-0 PAC) in the 31st minute.
Alvernia took an early 1-0 lead on what was credited as an own goal by the host Cavaliers (3-3, 0-1 PAC) in the sixth minute. An Alvernia corner kick was not immediately cleared out of the box and in the ensuing scrum the ball caromed off a Cavalier defender and into the net. Naylon was set up for his team-leading fourth goal of the season midway through the first half by Tim Marcinek (Philadelphia, PA/LaSalle). Naylon took a breakaway feed and slid the ball past Cabrini keeper Colin Hinkelmon, off the left post and in.
The Cavs got on the board before halftime on Mike McDevitt’s third goal of the season assisted by Jason Moran and Brent Benner. The Crusaders, who enjoyed a slight 10-8 edge in shots in the first half held the 2-1 lead into the halftime break.
The teams played scoreless for most of the second half until Alvernia senior Cody Gambler (Mohsville, PA/Schuylkill Valley) tallied his first goal of the season in the 87th minute assisted by Moss Grande (Sinking Spring, PA/Wilson). Alvernia finished the day with a 15-12 lead in shots and sophomore keeper Richard Kessler (Reading, PA/Reading) made two saves to earn the win.
Alvernia will continue the PAC schedule on Saturday when it hosts Marywood University at 3:30 p.m.
