Wyomissing, Pa. (Sept. 2, 2006) – Senior forward Jessie Titus (Leesport, PA/Schuylkill Valley) took a pass from junior Amber Landis (Ephrata, PA/Ephrata) in the middle of a puddle that soaked nearly the entire offensive third of the field and slapped home her first goal of the season to break a 3-3 tie and propel Alvernia College to a 5-3 win over Susquehanna University Saturday afternoon in non-conference field hockey action at Wyomissing High School.
Junior Shayna Clark (Leesport, PA/Schuylkill Valley) added her second goal of the game with just over four minutes remaining and Alvernia withstood a late surge of Susquehanna (0-1) penalty corners in the final minutes to improve to 2-0 on the opening weekend of the 2006 season.
Susquehanna, playing toward the drier portion of the field, tallied a pair of goals in the early parts of the second half to knot the score at 3-all. Freshman forward Andrea Fiori (West Trenton, NJ/Lawrenceville) scored unassisted less than three minutes after halftime, and senior forward Jenni Iacovone (Woodstown, NJ/Woodstown) threw a ball across the face of the cage that Megan Sites (Loysville, PA/West Perry) finished to draw even with 22:08 to play.
Susquehanna took an early lead just over 90 seconds after the opening whistle. Sophomore Maggie Kramer (Royersford, PA/Villa Maria Academy) had no trouble with the soggy conditions as she beat Alvernia keeper Audrey Hoffman (Mertztown, PA/Brandywine Heights) unassisted to open the scoring.
Alvernia responded 10 minutes later on Christy Miller’s (Alburtis, PA/Brandywine Heights) first goal as a Crusader, and the hosts took the early lead when Megan Novogratz (Allentown, PA/Central Catholic) finished a feed from Miller in the 18th minute. Clark drove home her first of the day and second of the season assisted by Dawn Beiswenger (Denver, PA/Garden Spot) just over a minute later for the 3-1 lead at the break.
Hoffman and Mandy Yocum (Morgantown, PA/Twin Valley) each played 35 minutes in net and made two saves apiece for Alvernia while Lyndsay Meabon (Dillsburg, PA/Northern) went the distance for Susquehanna making seven saves.
The game was moved to Wyomissing High School’s turf field earlier in the week due to heavy rains in the forecast this weekend. Alvernia, the 2005 Pennsylvania Athletic Conference champions, will host regional foe Lebanon Valley College on Wednesday in the final tune up for the conference schedule which starts with Wesley College next Saturday.
