Doubles Wins Lead Alvernia Past Immaculata, 5-4

Immaculata, Pa. (Sept. 22, 2006) – Two freshmen Janine Horning (Red Hill, PA/Upper Perkiomen) and Stephanie Penrose (Pottstown, PA/Pottstown) earned singles wins as did sophomore Breana Martzall (Lancaster, PA/Conestoga Valley) as Alvernia split the six singles matches and held on for a 5-4 win over Immaculata University Friday afternoon in Pennsylvania Athletic Conference women’s tennis action at Immaculata.

            Alvernia took a 2-1 lead in the match with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.  Martzall and Penrose won 8-4 at No. 3 doubles and Horning teamed with Heather Leader (Pottstown, PA/Owen J. Roberts) to win 8-2 at No. 2 doubles.

            Horning posted a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 3 singles while Martzall and Penrose also won in straight sets at No. 5 and No. 6 singles respectively.

            Alvernia picked up its first win of the season and is scheduled to face Lebanon Valley in non-conference action on Saturday.
