BOX SCORE
Reading, Pa. (Sept. 23, 2006) – Senior midfielder Liz Gallagher (Turnersville, NJ/Washington Twp.) settled a ball in the box and booted home the game-tying goal in the 74th minute that helped Alvernia to a 3-3 tie with Arcadia University Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania Athletic Conference women’s soccer action at Schlager Memorial Field.
Alvernia junior Lisa Ross (Quakertown, PA/Quakertown) served a free ball into the box from midfield that Gallagher collected in a scrum and slipped past Arcadia keeper Auralia Kubat (New Tripoli, PA/Northwestern) to forge the second tie of the day.
The Scarlet Knights (3-5-1, 1-1-1 PAC) scored a goal early in the second half that erased what had been a 2-0 lead for the host Crusaders (2-3-1, 2-2-1 PAC), and Amanda Pote (Philadelphia, PA/St. Huberts) gave the guests a 3-2 lead with an unassisted goal in the 57th minute.
Both keepers played the full 110 minutes and made eight saves each. Alvernia starter Katie Einsel (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) continued to anchor the Crusaders’ defense and made a number of spectacular saves including a pair in the overtime periods.
Alvernia junior Brandi Light (Myerstown, PA/Tulpehocken) opened the scoring early skimming home the first of Ross’s two free kick assists. With just under two minutes gone, Ross served a free ball from 35 yards out over the Arcadia defense that Light ran under and redirected past Kubat. Sophomore Patricia Lapinsky (Magnolia, DE/St. Thomas More) put the hosts up 2-0 in the 14th minute when her sliding shot also beat Kubat. Senior forward Kristina Bittner (Boothwyn, PA/Cardinal O’Hara) ripped a shot that was turned aside and Lapinski outran the Arcadia keeper to the rebound for her first goal of the season.
Arcadia generated a bit of momentum late in the half on its first corner kick opportunity of the day. The Alvernia defense was unable to clear the initial corner and Pote knocked it in to cut the lead in half. Arcadia junior Kat Kraemer (Pitman, NJ/Clearview) collected the ball 30 yards out with just over two minutes gone in the second half and put a shot into the upper right corner that tied the score at 2-all.
Both teams had chances in the overtime periods with Einsel snuffing out the Knight’s chances and Kubat up to the challenge twice against the Crusader offense.
