Lebanon, Pa. (Sept. 25, 2006) – Sophomore Derek Stewart (Bernville, PA/Tulpehocken) recovered from a four-over through four start to shoot 3-over 75 and lead Alvernia College to a 321 team total and a tie for eighth at the Lebanon Valley College Fall Golf Invitational Monday afternoon hosted by Lebanon Country Club.
Sophomore Will Tonking (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) shot 8-over 80 followed by Matt MacCrea (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough), who shaved 24 strokes off his last Lebanon CC round, at 81, and Ryan Weaber (Lebanon, PA/Cedar Crest) at 85.
Stewart opened the round with a par at the 355 yard par-4 16th, but followed with double bogey, bogey, bogey before posting back-to-back birdies at the par 5 2nd and par 3 3rd. His birdie at the par 5 7th helped him to a 1-under 35 on the front to go with a 40 on the inward nine.
Tonking had the low back nine for the Crusaders posting a 2-over 38 with five pars, three bogies, and a birdie at the difficult par 4 11th.
Alvernia will have a two week break before traveling to Lehigh Country Club on Oct. 9 for the Muhlenberg College Fall Invitational.
