Reading, Pa. (Sept. 26, 2006) – Seniors Moss Grande (Sinking Spring, PA/Wilson) and Cody Gambler (Mohrsville, PA/Schuylkill Valley) scored two goals each to lead Alvernia College to a 6-0 win over Marywood University Tuesday afternoon in Pennsylvania Athletic Conference men’s soccer action at Schlager Memorial Field.
Grande opened the scoring in the 27th minute with his first goal of the season assisted by Cory Lush (Reading, PA/Reading). Gambler put the host Crusaders (6-2-1, 3-0 PAC) up 2-0 with a goal at 28:18 and Grande added his second 38 seconds later for an early 3-0 lead.
Sophomore defender Tyler Absalom (Fleetwood, PA/Fleetwood) one-timed a header from Tim Marcinek (Philadelphia, PA/LaSalle) on a free kick to set up Gambler on back door with a wide open net, and Zach Naylon (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin) set up Grande less than a minute later.
Gambler added to the Alvernia lead just over three minutes into the second half knocking home a feed from junior Nate Pletscher (Oley, PA/Oley Valley). David Schaeffer (Pottstown, PA/Pottstown) added his second goal of the season in the 65th minute and Naylon finished the scoring with his seventh of the season in the 75th minute.
Sophomore goalie Richard Kessler (Reading, PA/Reading) was untested in 58 minutes before giving way to Stephen Walsh (Havertown, PA/Haverford) who finished the game. Marywood keeper Danny Reynolds (Mweiswn, CT/Orville H. Platt) made seven saves in net for the Pacers.
Alvernia will continue the conference schedule on Saturday when it hosts Neumann College for a 1:00 p.m. match.
