Clark’s Second Half Goal Leads Alvernia Past FDU 3-2

Yocum Saves 11 Including Nine After Halftime

Florham, N.J.. (Sept. 30, 2006) – After both teams combined to score four goals in a 13 minute span in the first half, junior forward Shayna Clark (Leesport, PA/Schuylkill Valley) scored the only goal of the second half to give Alvernia College a 3-2 win over FDU-Florham Saturday afternoon in non-conference field hockey action at FDU.

            Alvernia senior Jessie Titus (Leesport, PA/Schuylkill Valley) continued to show her scoring touch with her seventh goal of the season in the 15th minute.  FDU answered with goals from Krystle Birmingham and Christina Fabian in the 19th and 24th minutes, and Clark capped the early flurry with an unassisted goal in the 28th minute to tie the score at 2-all.

            Alvernia (9-1) held a slight 6-4 advantage in shots in the opening frame and earned all three of its penalty corners before the break.  FDU goalie Jamie SanFilippo made five of her seven saves in the opening 35 minutes.

            The host Devils (7-3) turned up the heat posting a 9-4 advantage in shots in the second half, but Alvernia sophomore Mandy Yocum (Morgantown, PA/Twin Valley) responded saving all nine shots to reach 11 for the day.  FDU also earned all seven of its penalty corners in the second half.

            Clark broke the tie for the Crusaders in the 58th minute scoring her fifth goal of the season unassisted.  Alvernia will return to the conference schedule on Monday when it hosts Cedar Crest College.
