BOX SCORE
Reading, Pa. (Sept. 6, 2006) – Lebanon Valley College scored three times in the final 14 minutes and five total after halftime in a 5-3 win over Alvernia College Wednesday afternoon in non-conference field hockey action at Alvernia.
Alvernia sophomore Christy Miller (Alburtis, PA/Brandywine Heights) scored in the 53rd minute to break a 2-2 tie, but LVC sophomore Amber Corcoran (Chambersburg, PA/Chambersburg) answered that goal five minutes later and the Dutchmen added two more in a two minute stretch to improve to 4-1 all time versus Alvernia.
Alvernia started the game strong scoring twice in the opening half for a 2-0 lead at the break. Senior forwards Becky Macchione (Richland, PA/Conrad Weiser) and Megan Novogratz (Allentown, PA/Central Catholic) each notched a goal with Novogratz scoring in the eighth minute assisted by Jessie Titus (Leesport, PA/Schuylkill Valley) and Macchione scoring unassisted in the 22nd.
The Crusaders (2-1) appeared to be headed toward their second 3-0 start under eighth-year head coach Laura Gingrich, and second since the team started 6-0 in 2004, but a second half rush from the guests prevented that chance. LVC used an 8-2 advantage in shots and a 9-5 edge in penalty corners after the break to improve to 2-0 on the young season.
Senior forward Steph Marguglio (Bridgeton, NJ/Bridgeton) led the Dutchmen attack with a pair of goals and senior Katie Pawlewicz (Reading, PA/Holy Name) made five saves in net for the win. Alvernia keeper Mandy Yocum (Morgantown, PA/Twin Valley) went the distance for the Crusaders and made three saves.
Alvernia will begin the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference schedule on Saturday hosting Wesley College. The past three PAC Titles belong to Wesley (’03, ’04) and Alvernia (’05). Game time on Saturday is 1:00 p.m.
