CAMDEN, N.J. (Sept. 8, 2006) – Wesley College used four first-half goals and Alvernia College was sparked by a pair of goals from senior midfielder Zach Naylon (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin, DE) as both teams won opening-day games at the Sixth Annual Cialella Soccer Classic at Rutgers University-Camden here Friday.
Wesley defeated Delaware Valley College, 6-0, and Alvernia edged Rutgers-Camden, 2-1.
In Saturday’s matchups, Delaware Valley will face Alvernia at 5 p.m., followed by Rutgers-Camden against Wesley at 7:15 p.m. Since the matchups are pre-determined, the winner will be decided on a series of tie-breakers if two or more teams are tied in points.
Alvernia 2, Rutgers-Camden 1
The Crusaders raced to a 2-0 lead early in the second half as Naylon scored on a shot off the crossbar at 51:12, following a corner kick. He also scored a first-half goal at 6:13, assisted by junior midfielder Cory Lush (Reading, PA/Reading).
Rutgers-Camden finally broke the scoring ice at 80:17 on a goal by sophomore forward Andrew Dorsey (Mt. Laurel, NJ/The King’s Christian School), assisted by junior midfielder Rodney Guishard (Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest). The Raptors couldn’t get the tying goal, despite a late-game flurry that left them with a deceiving 13-7 advantage in shots.
Alvernia (1-1-1) freshman keeper Daniel Houser (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra) made six saves, including a huge save off the foot of Raptor senior midfielder Michael Reed (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) in the second half when it was still a 2-0 game.
Rutgers-Camden (1-2) senior goalie David Cunningham (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern) made three saves.
Wesley 6, Delaware Valley 0
In the opening game of the night, Wesley (2-0) scored four goals in a four-minute span and went on to race past Delaware Valley College (0-3). The Wolverines used first-half tallies by junior forward Allen Justis (Pocomoke, MD/Pocomoke) at 19:58, senior midfielder Joey Spino (Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic) at 21:11, sophomore forward Brendyn Pressley (Willingboro, NJ/Bishop Eustace) at 22:46 and senior midfielder Robbie Polk (Woodstown, NJ/Woodstown) at 23:40. Spino also assisted on Pressley’s goal.
In the second half, Wesley received goals from junior midfielder Brian McCann (Franklinville, NJ/Delsea Regional) and junior forward Matt Doyle (Manasquan, NJ/Wall).
The Wolverines held a 25-5 advantage in shots, forcing Aggies senior keeper Nick D’Amato (Penns Park, PA/Council Rock) to make nine saves. For Wesley, a trio of keepers combined for three saves, with senior Edward Hunt (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley) seeing 55:17 in goal and making two saves to earn the win.
