Alvernia University Athletics

Crusaders Tame Bulldogs 5-1

Bethlehem, Pa. (January 20, 2007) - Freshman Ammon Morgan (Schwenksville, PA/Springford HS) made his first start in goal and responded with his first collegiate victory.  Alvernia’s netminder turned away 14 shots, and DeSales University collected the lone goal in the final minutes of the third period while skating with a two-man advantage.  The Crusaders offense supported the defense with five different goal scorers.

Alvernia grabbed the lead midway through the first period when Ryan Kelly (Ardmore, PA/ Lower Merion HS) stashed home his team high 11th goal.

Freshman John Caputo (Philadelphia,PA/Roman Catholic HS) added some breathing room early in the second period redirecting defenseman Brent Reed’s (Hamburg PA/Hamburg HS) dump in shot.  Michael Gilhool (Boothwyn, PA/Chichester HS) added a late second period goal while camping on the crease doorstep, and tipped home forward Conor Delaney’s (Red Bank NJ/Red Bank HS) shot from the top of the left face off circle.

Alvernia padded the margin early in  the third period when forward Bruce Hawthorne (Blooming Glen PA/Pennridge HS) connected on a controversial goal.  Hawthorne managed to catch a rebound off his skate in the slot which caromed between the Bulldog goalie's five hole.  The Crusaders sealed the game with second line center Pete Cirard (Levittown, PA/Truman HS) sniped home his ninth goal of the season.  Despite the final minute short handed breakdown, the stingy Alvernia defense received a strong showing from freshman Michael Smith (Philadelphia, PA/Roman Catholic HS) who gave a steady backline performance.
