BOX SCORE

Dover, Del. (Jan. 25, 2007) – Alvernia College sophomore Terrence Shawell (Pottstown, PA/Pottstown) outscored the leading scorer in the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference for the second time this season after matching a school record with 38 points in a 79-69 win over Wesley College Thursday evening at Jim and Shirley Wentworth Gymnasium.

Alvernia completed a season sweep against the preseason favorite having defeated the Wolverines (6-11, 4-6 PAC) 80-65 back in Reading on December 9.  Shawell exploded for 25 of his then career-high 31 points in the second half of that game and topped that with Thursday night’s effort.

Senior guard Garrett Etzel (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin) scored 18 and freshman Matt King (Phoenixville, PA/St. Pius X) added 13 for the Crusaders.  Senior Ryan Finger (Lancaster, PA/Lampeter Strasburg) played a team-high 38 minutes without a single shot, but rang up four rebounds and a game-high eight assists.

Shawell finished the night 13-of-24 from the floor including a 4-for-10 effort from the 3-point arc.  He also pulled down 11 boards to record his fourth double-double of the season.  Sophomore center Tyrone Bradley (Chester, PA/Chester) pulled down a team and career-high 15 rebounds for the Crusaders (13-3, 8-1 PAC).

Wesley was led by sophomore Rashawn Johnson (Selbyville, DE/Sussex Tech) who scored 20 points, three shy of his conference leading average of 23.5.  Sophomore Cody White (Milton, DE/Sussex Tech) also reached double figures for the Wolverines with 14 points, and grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds.

Alvernia jumped out to a 37-25 lead at the break and improved to 12-0 this season when it has a halftime lead.  The Crusaders hit 13 shots from the field in each half and finished at 45.6 percent.  The Maroon and Gold also used at 13-for-17 free throw effort in the second half to hold the Wolverines at bay.

Alvernia will return home to face Eastern University Saturday at 3:00 p.m. as part of a women’s and men’s doubleheader.  Former Crusader Daimen Hunter (’98), who scored 38 points against Cabrini College on Feb. 4, 1998, is scheduled to return to the Physical Education Center for the men’s basketball alumni game following Saturday’s doubleheader.
