BOX SCORE

Gwynedd Valley, Pa. (Jan. 29, 2007) – Alvernia College sophomore Tyrone Bradley (Chester, PA/Chester) scored five straight points to give the Crusaders their largest lead of the night, 51-47 with 4:19 to play, but Gwynedd-Mercy scored 10 of the final 13 points for a 57-54 win Monday evening in Pennsylvania Athletic Conference men’s basketball action at the Griffifn Complex.

GMC got back-to-back buckets from David Smith (Cape May Court House, NJ/Middle Twp.) and Jack Forth (Upper Merion, PA/Upper Merion) to build a five point lead with just under nine minutes to play.  Alvernia sophomore Terrence Shawell (Pottstown, PA/Pottstown) crashed the offensive glass to cut the gap to three before Haven Wroten (Philadelphia, PA/Prep Charter) hit 1-of-2 free throws for the Griffins. Alvernia senior Garrett Etzel (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin) hit his second 3 of the night preceding Bradley’s run.

Smith and Wroten followed Bradley’s effort with buckets for the hosts to knot the score at 51-all with 2:24 to play.  Alvernia came up empty on its next possession and GMC senior Chris DelBrocco (Philadelphia, PA/St. John Neumann) hit a tough jumper to give the Griffins a 53-51 lead.  Shawell was fouled going to the hoop with a minute to play and hit 1-of-2 free throws to cut the gap to one.

The Griffins sent the ball inside to Smith the next time down and the 6-7 sophomore hit a drop-step jumper to push the gap back to three.  Shawell then knocked down with a jumper which Forth answered with two free throws.  Etzel worked for a look from the arc with under 10 seconds to play, but couldn’t hit and the Griffins tracked down the rebound and the three point win.

Smith led the Griffins with 14 points and DelBrocco and Forth added 12 points each.  Wroten had a solid game for the hosts with nine points and eight rebounds.  Shawell led all players with 20 points while Bradley scored 15 and added a game-high 10 rebounds.  Etzel also reached double figures with 10 points.

The Crusaders hit just 3-of-5 free throws, all in the second half, and struggled from the arc going 3-of-19.  The Griffins hit exactly 50 percent from the floor and outrebounded Alvernia 30-27.

Alvernia will travel to Cabrini Thursday for a women’s and men’s doubleheader.  The Griffins travel to Reading for a rematch next Monday.
