Myrtle Beach S.C. (Tuesday, March 13, 2006) – The Crusaders (3-1) fell to Rio Grande (2-1) by a score of 0-8 to open the day, but bounced back in the second game to defeat PSU-Altoona 7-1. The first game saw sophomore pitcher Lauren Crimi (Nazareth, PA/Notre Dame) pitch a solid game, but fall victim to seven Alvernia errors resulting in eight unearned runs. Fellow sophomore pitcher Emily Williams (Minersville, PA/Nativity BVM) earned the victory against Penn State Altoona giving up only one earned run over seven innings.
In the first game of the day, Alvernia managed only three hits off the bats of freshman Janelle Lynch (Macungie, PA/Brandywine Heights), Rachel Evans (Tower City, PA/Williams Valley HS), and Crimi who connected for a triple down the right field. Rio Grande capitalized on the Crusaders sloppy defense to push four runs across in the first two innings, one in the fourth, and three in the sixth for the 0-8 loss.
Alvernia started the second game with four scoreless innings before junior Colleen Ambrosius (Philadelphia, PA/St. Basil Academy) connected for an RBI single in the fifth. The Crusaders added five more in the sixth, highlighted by a 3-RBI double by junior Jackie Rhoads (Dillsburg, PA/Northern York). Freshman Evans highlighted the Crusaders offensive effort with a 4-for-4 performance, including two doubles.
The Crusaders face off against Utica and Charleston College in tomorrow’s games.
