BOX SCORE (Game Two)
Glenside, Pa. (Mar. 24, 2007) – Alvernia College struggled with just six hits and one run in two games getting swept by Arcadia University in a Pennsylvania Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Enry Field, 4-1 and 1-0.
Junior outfielder Tim Carroll (Bensalem, PA/Conwell-Egan) collected a pair of hits on the day for Alvernia (6-5, 0-2 PAC) and junior first baseman Zach Lutz (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) had a hit and three walks. Senior Jason Zeigler (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin) went the distance in game one and took the loss giving up just one earned run. Freshman Shane Zellers (Wiconisco, PA/Williams Valley) threw a complete game in game two and took the loss also with one earned run surrendered.
In game one Zeigler worked around a walk and a hit in the first inning, but the Scarlet Knights (5-2, 2-0 PAC) drove home a run in the second on a single, a sacrifice, and a groundout. Alvernia responded with a single run in the top of the fifth to knot the score at 1-all. Corey Berghardt (Boyertown, PA/Boyertown) walked to open the inning, took second when Lutz reached on an error, and eventually scored on an RBI-groundout from Chris Raniere (Manalapan, NJ/St. John Vianney).
Zeigler walked the first batter in the bottom of the fifth and threw wide on a sacrifice bunt attempt to put two men on. The next batter successfully bunted the runners to second and third, but Alvernia retired John Connell (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) on a pop out to short stop. That brought clean up hitter Ken Spangenberg (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) to the plate who drove a 3-1 pitch out to right for a 4-1 lead.
Alvernia put the first two runners on in the seventh, but lost one on the base paths and two fly balls to the outfield ended the game.
In game two the Knights put the only run of the game on the board in the fifth inning on back-to-back singles and an RBI groundout. Both of Zellers’ losses this season are 1-0 setbacks. The freshman hurler pitched around three base runners in the second inning and a leadoff walk in the fourth.
Lutz rapped a one-out double in the fourth inning, but was stranded on back-to-back pop outs. A pair of batters walked in the sixth, but again the Crusaders failed to get the big hit to knock in a run.
Alvernia will host Rowan University in a makeup game on Sunday afternoon at 1:00.
