Reading, Pa (Sunday, March 25, 2007) – The Crusader softball team dropped both games in their home opener to College Misericordia by scores of 0-8 and 0-3 Sunday afternoon at Alvernia College. Sophomore pitcher Emily Williams (Minersville, PA/Nativity BVM) suffered the loss in game one, surrendering nine hits in five innings of work. Beth Jablonowski (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) was tagged with the loss in game two giving up eight hits over seven innings.
The Cougars from Misericordia went up 1-0 quickly in the top of the first inning with a homerun off the bat of senior Jennifer Gehman (Coopersburg, PA/Southern Lehigh). Gehman connected again in the third inning for a two-run homerun. Misericordia put the game away in the top of the fifth inning, with five runs off of five hits and two walks for the 8-0 victory. The Crusaders managed only two hits, both singles off the bat of freshman Janelle Lynch (Macungie, PA/Brandywine Heights).
The Crusader bats again failed to ignite in the second game of the doubleheader, as they connected for only three hits. College Misericordia went up 1-0 again in the first inning, off of yet another homerun by Gehman. They added one more in the third and sixth to hold on for the 3-0 victory.
Alvernia returns to action at home versus Cabrini Tuesday, March 27 at 3:00 p.m.
