BOX SCORE

Reading, Pa. (Mar. 28, 2007) – Freshman starter Brian Longo (Uncasville, CT/Montville) threw six innings of shutout ball and junior Zach Lutz (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) drove in two runs to lead Alvernia College to a 6-0 win over Penn State Berks in non-conference baseball action Wednesday afternoon at Alvernia.

Longo scattered four hits, walked three, and struck out five to pick up his second win of the season.  Lutz drove home the first run of the game with a double in the home half of the first inning and put the Crusaders (9-6) up 5-0 with a run-scoring single in the eighth.  Junior leadoff hitter Tim Carroll (Bensalem, PA/Conwell-Egan) scored two runs for Alvernia.

Alvernia posted single runs in the first, third, fourth, and sixth innings before tacking on a pair in the bottom of the eighth.  Berks (4-4) had a runner reach second base three times during the game, but always with two outs and all three the runner was stranded.

Alvernia is scheduled to play Friday at Gwynedd-Mercy in the first game of an important three-game conference series.
