O’Brien Paces Crusaders With Five Goals

Reading, Pa. (Mar. 31, 2007) – Junior Katie O’Brien (Boothwyn, PA/Garnet Valley) scored five goals and McKenna Shafer (Delran, NJ/Cinnaminson) and Laura-Beth Diggs (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Mem.) added four each to lead Alvernia College to a 23-6 win over Arcadia University Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania Athletic Conference women’s lacrosse action at Schlager Memorial Field.

            Alvernia (2-2, 1-2 PAC) jumped out early scoring four goals in the opening four minutes for a 4-0 lead.  Arcadia (0-5, 0-3 PAC) scored once to stop the run but Shafer and O’Brien scored twice each during a 7-0 run that put Alvernia up 11-1 with 10:25 still to play in the first half.  The Crusaders maintained the 10-goal lead with a 13-3 score at the break.

            Sophomore goalie Janelle Fulmer (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus) played 48 minutes in net for the Crusaders and recorded four saves.  Amanda Odenwalt (Lancaster, PA/The Janus School) finished the game and recorded one save.

            Alvernia recorded 33 ground balls on the day led by O’Brien who scooped up seven.   Diggs and senior Melissa Senick (Reading, PA/Central Catholic) each recorded three caused turnovers for Alvernia.

            The Crusaders are scheduled to host Rosemont College on Monday for a conference game.
