Alvernia Hangs Tight losing 0-1, Before Falling in the Second Game 5-13

Saturday, April 14, 2007 (Glenside, PA) - Alvernia softball dropped both games of a key doubleheader today, as they fell to Arcadia 0-1 and 5-13.  With the wins, Arcadia Softball extended their win streak to ten games.  Despite giving up only four hits and one earned run in the first game, Emily Williams (Minersville, PA/Nativity BVM) was tagged with the loss.

The first game had all the makings of a classic pitcher's duel, with no runs and only four hits between the two teams.  Arcadia pitcher Jenn Compton (P/IF/SR/Bensalem/Bensalem, PA) ended the scoreless tiw when she sent a sixth inning home run over the fence for her team’s only run of the game.  Despite getting runners to second and third in the top of the seventh inning, the Crusaders couldn't push the tying run across after two ground outs ended the threat.

In game two, Alvernia posted four runs in the first inning.  Senior Suzanne Fox (Glassboro, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) opened the game with a homerun, and Hollie Dobson (Tallytown, PA/Pennsbury) connected for a two-run dinger of her own to cap the first inning rally.  Despite their early lead, the Crusaders had to deal with Arcadia's talented senior class who sent a total of four long balls out of the park, scored seven runs and brought in seven, leading the Knights to the 13-5 come from behind win.

Trailing 4-2 heading into the bottom of the second, Danielle Discher (Little Flower/Philadelphia, PA) belted a line drive up the middle catching the Crusader outfield off guard, as she sped around the bases, sliding home to spark a would be onslaught of offense from her teammates, and giving the Knights a 5-4 lead.  Arcadia would add five more runs in the fifth inning including two more homeruns, and ended the game in the sixth after a wild pitch allowed the runner from third to score.

The Crusaders are back in action Monday, April 16 at 4:30pm for a doubleheader at Swarthmore.
