Shafer Leads Alvernia With Five Goals

Reading, Pa. (Apr. 22, 2007) – Junior McKenna Shafer (Delran, NJ/Cinnaminson) scored a game-high five goals and Alvernia College scored 10 goals after halftime to break open a halftime tie a lead to a 15-8 victory over Centenary College Sunday afternoon in non-conference women’s lacrosse action at Schlager Memorial Field.

            Shafer and seniors Megan Novogratz (Allentown, PA/Central Catholic) and Karen Hutton (Ridgewood, NJ/Eastern Christian) each notched unassisted goals to open the game and Alvernia (5-5) staked itself to a 3-0 lead.  Shafer answered Centenary’s first goal of the game to maintain the three-goal lead, but the visiting Cyclones tallied three straight to knot the game at 4-4.

            Hutton scored her second of the game for a  5-4 lead, but Centenary scored again to tie the score at 5-all heading into halftime.

            Shafer opened the second half with a goal and capped streak of six straight for the hosts who took an 11-5 lead with 22 minutes still left to play.  Centenary finally stopped the second half streak with a pair of goals, but Alvernia came back with four straight capped by a pair from Laura-Beth Diggs (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial) who finished with three goals for the Crusaders.

            Alvernia sophomore Janelle Fulmer (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus) made eight saves in net for the Crusaders.

            Alvernia will close out the regular season hosting Immaculata on Wednesday.
