BOX SCORE

Dallas, Pa. (Apr. 2, 2007) – Junior starter Pete Fernandez (Waldwick, NJ/Bogota) struck out eight batters in seven innings and senior Chris Raniere (Manalapan, NJ/St. John Vianney) went 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs as Alvernia College complete a three-game sweep of College Misericordia Monday afternoon with an 9-2 victory in Pennsylvania Athletic Conference baseball action at Misericordia.

Alvernia (12-7, 5-3 PAC) built a 5-0 lead on a sac fly by Raniere in the first and a four spot in the second inning.  All four runs in the second came with two out; the big blow a bases loaded, two-run single off the bat of senior DH Jason Zeigler (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin).

Fernandez set the tone on the mound striking out the side in the second inning and fanning a pair in the fifth.  The Cougars (1-18, 0-8 PAC) put a single run on the board in the third inning on three straight hits, but Fernandez shut down the rally with a 5-3 double play to end the inning.

Both teams plated single runs in the seventh inning and Alvernia junior Dale Curry (Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge) belted a three-run homer in the ninth for the 9-2 final.

Alvernia sophomore Steve Geisel (Schnecksville, PA/Parkland) struck out two in a scoreless eighth and freshman Pete Mazzie (Barto, PA/Boyertown) worked the ninth to close the game.

Alvernia will host Albright College in a non-conference game on Tuesday afternoon.
