Alvernia Sweeps Second Local Rival, 3-0 Over Albright

Longo Goes Seven For Third Win

BOX SCORE

Reading, Pa. (Apr. 3, 2007) – Freshman starter Brian Longo (Uncasville, CT/Montville) threw seven shutout innings for his third win of the season and Alvernia College posted its second shutout of a local rival in as many weeks topping Albright 3-0 Tuesday afternoon in non-conference baseball action at Alvernia.

The Crusaders (13-7), who blanked Penn State-Berks 6-0 last Wednesday, plated a pair of runs in the first inning on an RBI groundout off the bat of Jason Zeigler (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin) and a run-scoring single by Chris Raniere (Manalapan, NJ/St. John Vianney).

Longo stranded runners in each of the first four innings and set down the Lions (7-9) in order in the fifth.  The 6-3 righty struck out his third batter of the day to end the sixth and fanned the final two to close the seventh.  Sophomore Steve Geisel (Schnecksville, PA/Parkland) worked a scoreless eighth and junior Andrew Long (Pottstown, PA/Pottstown) struck out the side in the ninth for his fifth save of the season.

Albright managed just four hits on the day, all of Longo, and two by junior leadoff Kyle Wenrich (Reading, PA/Reading).  Raniere finished the day 1-for-3 at the plate with a pair of RBIs.  His fly ball in the eighth plated junior Tim Carroll (Bensalem, PA/Conwell-Egan) for his second run of the day.  Carroll also collected two hits for Alvernia.  Junior Zach Lutz (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) was 1-for-2 with a pair of walks and a run scored.

Both teams turned one double play and Carroll’s eighth inning double down the line was the only extra base hit of the day.

Alvernia will return to the conference schedule hosting Arcadia University Wednesday in a rescheduled game.
