Reading, Pa. (Apr. 5, 2007) – Senior pitcher Jason Zeigler (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin) gave up two runs over seven innings while striking out six and went 2-for-4 at the plate with a run and four RBIs to lead Alvernia College to an 8-3 win over Arcadia University Thursday afternoon in Pennsylvania Athletic Conference baseball action at Alvernia.
Zeigler struck out three batters over the first three innings and the game remained scoreless the first time through each lineup. Alvernia (14-7, 6-3 PAC) junior Zach Lutz (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) stole second base, his first of two stolen bases on the day, to put runners at second and third with one out in the fourth before Zeigler raped a two-run single to put the hosts up 2-0. Senior Ben Reifsnyder (Wyomissing, PA/Wilson) knocked in Zeigler with an RBI-groundout and the Crusaders were up 3-0. Lutz stole second base again in the fourth and Zeigler delivered his second two-run single in as many innings to push the lead to 5-0.
Arcadia (10-6, 6-3 PAC) broke through with two runs on three hits in the fifth inning, and cut the gap to two with a sac fly in the eighth.
Lutz opened the bottom of the eighth with his fourth home run of the season and the Crusaders tacked on two more runs for an 8-3 lead. Junior closer Andrew Long (Pottstown, PA/Pottstown) pitched a scoreless ninth to seal the win.
