BOX SCORE

Reading, Pa. (Jan. 26, 2008) – Two weeks ago Alvernia College gave up its second highest point total of the season in a 95-90 win at Cabrini. Saturday afternoon Alvernia put the clamps on the Cavs holding them to 54 points, the lowest opponent output of the season, in a 70-54 win in Pennsylvania Athletic Conference men's basketball action at the Physical Education Center.

Alvernia (9-7, 6-1 PAC) netted its first straight conference win holding Cabrini (7-10, 4-4 PAC) to 32 percent shooting in the second half, and broke a 25-all halftime tie with a 45-29 scoring advantage after the break. Junior forward Terrence Shawell (Pottstown, Pa./Pottstown) led all scorers with 20 points and sophomore Matt King (Phoenixville, Pa./St. Pius X) notched his fourth double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Cabrini set the tone early using a 10-2 run to break a 7-all tie and establish its largest lead of the game, 17-9, at the 11:08 mark. Shawell hit Alvernia's first 3 on the next possession to cut the lead to five and spark a quick 8-1 run that cut the Cabrini lead to two, 18-16.

The teams exchanged hoops for a few possessions before Shawell threw in an alley-oop dunk from King to knot the score at 22-all, the third tie of the day. An exchange of 1-for-2 free throw efforts ensued and Shawell's free throws at 3:28 were the final points of the half until Rodney Collins (Wilmington, Del./Concord) scored with five seconds left for a 25-all tie at the break.

Cabrini freshman Glenn Washington (Wayne, Pa./Radnor) knocked down a 3 to open the second-half scoring and give the Cavs a 28-25 lead, but the guests went scoreless for the next seven minutes. Alvernia sophomore Zach Westmoreland (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) scored on a layup and King's layup at 18:21 gave the lead back to the Crusaders.

Junior David Washington (Durham, N.C./Northern Durham) was next with a 3 and when the dust settled Alvernia had rattled off 21 straight points and held an 18-point lead, 46-28, with 12:43 to play. King lead a balanced attack during the run with six points.

Cabrini cut the lead down to 10 on a few occasions later in the half, but could not get any closer.
David Washington was the third player to reach double figures for the Crusaders with 10 and Glenn Washington led the Cavaliers with 19.

Alvernia will travel to Centenary College for a women's and men's doubleheader at 6:00 and 8:00 p.m.
