BOX SCORE BOX SCORE

Reading, Pa. (September 1, 2009) – Alvernia's new turf field saw its first action this afternoon as the Men's Soccer team defeated cross-town rival PSU-Berks 4-0 in non-conference action. Crusader junior Morgan Davidheiser (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) made things happen on offense with three assists in the first half, with all of Alvernia's goals coming from different players. With the win Alvernia is now 1-0 on the young season.

The first half saw the Crusaders outpace the Nittany Lions on offense with nine shots to PSU-Berks' one, and eight corner kicks to PSU-Berks' zero. Alvernia would light up the score board 11 minutes into the game when Davidheiser found freshman Brice Stine (Mohnton, Pa./Twin Valley) in front of the net, Stine quickly took advantage and drilled a shot over the diving PSU-Berks goalie for Alvernia's first tally of the game. The Crusaders would strike again in the 37th minute when Davidheiser found senior Chris Lasher (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) just past midfield and Lasher would take the ball down the field and fire in Alvernia's second goal of the game on a breakaway.

Alvernia would out shoot PSU-Berks by the same margin in the second half - 9-1, and Davidheiser would add his third assist of the afternoon in the 59th minute when he fed a brilliant pass to Adam Lush (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) who would take it up the field for the Crusader's second breakaway goal of the game. Alvernia's fourth goal came in the 75th minute thanks to freshman EJ Logan (Frederick, MD./Frederick) who recovered the rebound off a Shaquille Hudson (Denver, Pa./Cocalico) shot and redirected it for his first goal of the season.

The Nittany Lions would manage just two shots all game, both being saved by sophomore goalkeeper Drew Gilbert (Reading, Pa./Antietam).

The Crusaders will return to action this weekend when they travel to Cabrini College for the Cabrini Soccer Festival. They will take on Frostburg State University at 2:30pm on Sept. 4th.
